Bridging the Gap Between Legacy Mainframes and Cloud Infrastructure for Enhanced Enterprise Scalability and Agility
Abstract
Legacy mainframe systems form the backbone of many enterprise organizations, yet their integration with cloud infrastructure presents significant technical, architectural, and operational challenges. This research examines strategic approaches to bridge the gap between legacy mainframes and modern cloud environments, enabling organizations to leverage cloud benefits while maintaining mainframe reliability and investment. We explore hybrid IT architecture patterns, API enablement strategies using IBM z/OS Connect and RESTful services, network considerations including AWS Direct Connect, and security implications. Through comprehensive analysis of existing integration approaches and emerging best practices, this study identifies key implementation patterns and recommends a phased modernization strategy that balances legacy system preservation with cloud agility. The research demonstrates that successful mainframe-to-cloud integration requires careful consideration of scalability constraints, development agility enhancement, API-first architecture patterns, and comprehensive security frameworks. Our findings provide enterprise architects and IT leaders with actionable strategies for modernizing their infrastructure while protecting their mainframe investments and ensuring seamless hybrid operation.
